Mackena Heads To South Boston Speedway for NASCAR's Drive for Diversity Combine    Posted by: Bell Racing Sports Reporter  |  2008-09-30

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
By: Roger Diez - Nevada Appeal
September 30, 2008

CARSON CITY, NV ~ Mackena Bell is one of only 24 racers selected from hundreds of applicants nationwide to try out for NASCAR’s 2009 Drive for Diversity program.

She will be at Virginia’s South Boston Speedway on October 13 and 14 to participate in the elimination process that will choose eight drivers from the 24 selected racers. Each of the eight will receive a one-year contract, national publicity, and a chance to race with a professional NASCAR team.

This is Bell’s third attempt at the program, and her first invitation to the “combine” as the elimination process is known. “It is a terrific honor to be invited to the combine. It shows that they see my determination and focus, as well as my passion for the sport, “says Bell. “The first two times I really wasn’t ready, and I realize that now. But this year, even if I’m not selected for the program, I’m one step further than I was before.”

In a sport that was founded by bootleggers and shade tree mechanics, “diversity” is a relatively new concept. But NASCAR realized that the sport and the fan base has expanded over the years to encompass a much broader base; hence the Drive for Diversity initiative to encourage participation by female and minority racers. Bell is the epitome of the type of driver they are looking for.

She has been racing since she was 12 years old, first in dirt Outlaw karts, then in Legends cars, winning a Championship title in both.

Recently turned 18, she sold her Legends car to finance her own single-car late model race team. She has just completed her rookie season in the NASCAR Whelen Late Model series at All American Speedway in Roseville, California.

She is the youngest of the female late model drivers in the series and operates on a limited budget, with an all-volunteer crew of five plus her father, Kelly Bell. “I don’t have the budget to repair a lot of crash damage, so I have to be careful to take care of my stuff,” says Bell. Despite being careful, she has managed to score 11 top ten finishes and three top fives in 18 starts, racing against bigger and better funded teams. She is currently shown ninth in the final point standings, but a scoring review currently in progress could move her to eighth.

Bell is going to make a working vacation out of her trip back East, planning to visit race shops and tracks while there. She will attend the Nationwide and Cup series races at Lowe’s Motor Speedway with her crew chief, Dave Sciarroni, who will accompany her to the Drive for Diversity combine. But the highlight of the trip will be the two-day Drive for Diversity combine, which consists of a day of classroom instruction on things drivers need to know about interviews, press contacts, sponsor activities, and more. The second day is a track day, with each participant running a forty minute session, working with a veteran NASCAR crew chief and spotter. The session consists of running different racing lines as directed by the crew chief, giving feedback on the car’s handling, and running two mock qualifying laps.

Bell gives credit for her success thus far in her racing career to her parents, Kelly and Shannon, who have sacrificed a great deal to provide her with good equipment and loving support. But she is also thankful for the support from her younger sister Kellcy, herself a two-time champion in dirt karts. “Kellcy is my biggest fan,” says Bell.

She is also grateful to her sponsors; K. Bell Tile & Marble, Sciarroni Bros. Racing, K. Dub Creative Web & Graphic Design, NGK Spark Plugs, McBride Machine, Bell Racing Helmets, Joe the Chromer, Benny's Auto Painting, Tires 4 You and Ken Barrette.

But if Bell’s racing career should somehow not pan out, she plans to get her nursing credential and apply to become a Care Flight nurse. She has delayed starting classes at Western Nevada College in order to participate in the Drive for Diversity program, and plans to enter school in the spring semester. But whatever the future holds, here is a young woman with the will to succeed and great confidence in herself and her abilities. Her whole philosophy of life is wrapped up in one word that is emblazoned on the front of her racing helmet—“Believe.”

United States Senator Harry Reid Congratulates Bell on her NASCAR Whelen season    Posted by: Bell Racing Sports Reporter  |  2008-09-15

United States Senator Harry Reid contacted Mackena Bell to congratulate her on her successful 2008 Nascar Whelen season. (see letter under PHOTO icon)

In a letter dated August 14th and received September 10th, Reid noted that he was pleased to hear that Bell was doing well within the NASCAR Whelen points series at All American Speedway and sent Bell his best wishes for continued success.

Bell, who will be in Washington D.C. for the Presidential Inauguration in January 2009, is looking forward to a luncheon with the Senator and the opportunity to talk politics.

"I'm very excited to be voting during this election and even more excited to be witnessing such history making candidates. In a sport which demands sponsorship support, I'm hopeful that the economic situation will turn around and that the U.S. can get back on their feet and people can return to the lives they once knew."

Bell, who was once quoted in the Nevada Appeal as a Democrat says she is undecided at this point in the election. She continued by saying that she has taking the time to learn and read more about both candidates and since the announcement of both Vice Presidential candidates, is learning as much as possible and not ready to cast her vote until she is certain her vote is made with complete understanding of each party.

"All us kids that turned 18 this year have an opportunity of a life time in electing our first African-American President or the countries first female Vice President. It's an exciting time and I'm happy to be a part of it. I appreciate the Senators wishes, I look forward to meeting him in January and I intend to make the State of Nevada proud of me in the years ahead."

2008 NASCAR Whelen Series Ends With Goals Achieved and a Positive Look toward 2009!    Posted by: Bell Racing Sports Reporter  |  2008-09-09

When Mackena Bell arrived to All American Speedway in mid March for her first practice session in her family owned #11 NASCAR Whelen series late model, she was eager to prove herself to those around her and had some season goals she was determined to achieve.

In a summer which brought this young female up another rung on the racing ladder, Bell's determination was evident from the first night out as week-after-week she battled with the big teams, the heavy hitters and the past track Champions of the series.

With a season best finish of 4th, Bell found herself able to check-off all of her early 2008 rookie goals, including a Top 5 race finish, a top 4 qualifying effort, a Trophy Dash run and a Top 10 final points standing. However, Bell says the obvious goal was a win, a goal Bell was not able to obtain.

"Any race car driver that doesn't want to win, shouldn't be a race car driver," said Bell smiling. "It was difficult this season knowing that we had good equipment, but not great equipment like the others. I know what I'm capable of doing in a race car and knowing that if I crashed the car I could potentially be out for the remainder of the season, changed the way I raced and ultimately cost me positions that I know I would have fought for had the circumstances been different."

After missing four late model point races, Bell still managed to finish her rookie season with a solid 8th place points standing. In addition, she was able to break into the Top 200 late model drivers in the nation wide NASCAR Whelen series standings and the Top 25 late model drivers in the State of California. Mackena says she couldn't have done any of it without the support of her family, friends and her Mackena Bell Motorsports team.

"The crew never gave up on me, even when I was too hard on them. All of us shared the same desire to run hard and finish up front and it showed each time we checked-off another goal. I'm very appreciative to each of them for giving up their summer weekends and feel very thankful to be surrounded by such great friends. When you have a passion for this sport like I do, there is nothing else you'd rather be doing, and no place else you'd rather be. It's that simple for me and they supported that."

With the season now under wraps, I asked Mackena what her plans were for 2009. "I want to keep driving!" she said without hesitation. "I'm hoping that the economic situation of our country will be different next season and that more sponsors will be willing to participate. I have also applied for the 2009 NASCAR Drive for Diversity program and will be starting my college nursing program in the Spring. With on-line courses and my dedication to do whatever it takes to keep moving forward, I'm excited for 2009 and look forward to all the new possibilities it may bring me."

As the summer comes to an end, Bell will run a final Legends car race in Madera, CA., on September 20th and is also qualified for the October Legends Nationals in Minnesota. Bell will then return to All American Speedway in mid October for the 2-day All American Classic show. Shortly after, she will return to her dirt kart roots in November for the winter season in Red Bluff, CA.

""The thought of not racing doesn't cross my mind. If there is a track and I can get to it, I'll be racing! You have to keep your reaction skills and competitive nature on the surface, so taking time off from racing... well that just isn't in my vocabulary."

As with every interview, it is difficult not to feel the passion and excitement that this sport brings to this young driver. She is not only a female talent but a beautiful young lady who undoubtedly has a bright and successful future ahead of her. I thank Mackena for her candidness throughout the season and for making me a NASCAR Whelen series fan!

Speedway Officials Make Decision That Changes Outcome of 8/23/08 Finish    Posted by: Bell Racing Sports Reporter  |  2008-08-28

All American Speedway officials have made the decision to penalize a driver for rough driving during the final laps of the August 23, 2008 race. Because of this decision, Mackena Bell Motorsports was bumped from an 8th place position, to a 7th place finish.

As a reminder, this Labor Day weekend will be the final race for Mackena Bell Motorsports at All American Speedway.

Be sure to keep an eye on future news as the team is considering runs at other tracks during the months of September and October, 2008.

See YOU at the track!

Rear Shock Costs Bell The Pole    Posted by: Bell Racing Sports Reporter  |  2008-08-25

Mackena Bell in her K. Bell Tile & Marble #11 Late Model started her Saturday morning supporting the talents of her younger sister and past dirt karting champion, Kellcy, at a basketball tournament in nearby Citrus Heights, CA.

After taking in the first game where she loudly cheered on the younger Bell who plays in the primary point guard position, Bell headed roughly 15 minutes to nearby Roseville, CA. for race #16 of the All American Speedway Late Model schedule.

Buckling in for the first of two practice sessions, Bell would sit 8th during the first session and 11th during the second of the 18 car field. "The car felt too tight, so my Mackena Bell Motorsports crew made some adjustments before I hit the track for qualifying."

Posting a 14.255 lap at 84.180 mph, Bell would sit 11th in the qualifying order and immediately radio'd to her crew that something was still not right with her car. "I wasn't sure exactly what it was, but I knew it was coming from the back right rear of the car."

As the team went to work to find the problem, they discovered that a primary bolt had fallen out of the right rear shock. When All American Speedway officials agreed to let Bell run 2 more practice laps, she posted a 14.001 time. That 14.001 lap would have placed Bell 5th in the qualifying order for the night and placed her on the pole for the main event when an invert of 5 was drawn.

"You win some you lose some," said Bell. "I was just thankful that they allowed me to return to the track so that we could be sure we'd found the problem."

As Bell lined-up for the main event, she would start inside row 6 in the 11th place position. When the green flag fell, Bell put the pedal to the metal and started her move to the front. Battling with the #50 of Gary Glenn before he spun into the infield near lap 30, Bell continued forward and in a race that was spaced out and had minimal cautions, would cross the line in 8th place, behind female competitor Katie Hagar who had started on the pole. This finish bumps Bell into the Top 8 in NASCAR Whelen points and roughly 50 points out of the 7th spot.

"The car was fast but we wasted too many laps trying to get around the slower lap traffic at the beginning of the race. I'll add another Top 10 to my finishes this season and look to next weekend for a better finish."

This weekend Bell will participate in a "Ladies Night at the Track" where she will race in the spectator division for the fans. These cars can be rented for $300.00 each weekend and give the fans an opportunity to buckle in to a racecar and get some track time themselves. With lady drivers from the late model, bomber, street stocks and modified divisions, it is sure to be a fan favorite! An autograph signing session will take place before and after the event.

In addition to Bell's late model run this weekend, she will also head North to Ukiah, CA., on Sunday morning to run with the Legends of the Pacific division. A favorite past-time of her's, Bell says she is looking forward to returning to her old stomping grounds and reconnecting with past competitors. "Whenever I have the opportunity to support the Legends of the Pacific, I take it." Bell will be driving the #25 owned by her Crew Chief, Dave Sciarroni. Bell adds that the extra seat time in any race car is always advantagous and when her schedule allows, she jumps at every opportunity.

Be sure to re-visit Mackena's website for all the latest race details after the Labor Day weekend.

Until then, Mackena and her entire Mackena Bell Motorsports team wish each of you a happy and safe holiday weekend and hope to see YOU at the track!

Make it Three Top 5's for Mackena Bell Motorsports    Posted by: Bell Racing Sports Reporter  |  2008-08-18

Coming off a weekend that brought Mackena Bell two of her first Top 5 finishes this season, she took another step forward during race #15, qualifying within the top 4 of the 16 car field, running the Trophy Dash and adding yet another Top 5 to her 2008 summer stats.

As the Roseville, CA., temperatures passed the 100' degree mark, the track conditions made the car difficult for Bell to handle. In the final practice session of the day, as Bell was exiting the track, she heard the screeching tires of female competitor Kristin Bumbera. Bell assumed she too was experiencing the difficult track conditions.

Suddenly over her radio she heard the voice of her father Kelly, informing her that Bumbera had just slammed into the Turn 3 wall. Unbuckling and running for the fence, Bell heard talk that Bumbera's throttle had stuck open and she was unsettled at the amount of time it was taking for Bumbera to exit the car. "I'm very thankful that Kristin was alright," she said. "I could tell by the reaction of the people around me that they feared she might be hurt, so I was relieved to see her finally get out of the car. When you race every weekend and drive home in one piece, it's easy to forget just how dangerous this sport can be."

Shortly after the incident, Bell lined-up to qualify and did her best to settle her rattled nerves. Her goal for this weekend's race was to qualify within the Top 4 and make the Trophy Dash, something she had not yet achieved this season.

Posting a 4th place standing with a 13.984, 85.811 mph lap, Bell would keep that position throughout all 16 qualifiers and place herself on the pole of the Trophy Dash.

Getting a decent start at the green, Bell overdrove the car into Turn 3 and pushed high. When the #61 of Shannon Mansch got underneath her and had Bell side-ways off of Turn 4, Bell settled in behind her and crossed the line 3rd, behind winner Mahwhinney and Mansch.

As the track temperatures cooled and the feature event lined-up at 9:15pm, Bell would start inside, second row. During hot laps, Bell radioed to her Crew that the car felt very loose and that she was having a very difficult time keeping it down in the turns.

At the green, Bell did her best to tame the K. Bell Tile & Marble #11 ride, but found herself fighting it, lap after lap. With a full moon on the horizon, every driver on the track knew it was going to be a night of "action," and that it was!

With numerous caution flags for crashes, a blown motor and even a jack rabbit on the track, Bell managed to make her way through each incident. As the restart line-up would change with each caution, Bell found herself on the high-line several times and fell back as far as 10th before lap 30.

With 20 laps to go, Bell continued to radio to her crew that the car was incredibly loose and difficult to drive. "The car was the worst it has ever been," said Bell. "When I stepped on the gas it went no where. The tires just spun and the backend wanted to come around on me. As crazy as it was, it kept me up on the wheel and I have to say that my dirt experience definitely paid off tonight!"

As the final caution of the night flew with just 8 laps to go, Bell was sitting 4th and noticed that the 4,000+ spectators were on their feet. "I could actually hear the fans booing inside the car," said Bell. "I knew that full moon was a sign of the night," she said laughing.

As leaders Harraka and Mansch took the green, Harraka had spun and the officials had allowed him to return to his outside, front row position. As the crowd continued to let the officials know that they were unhappy with their decision, the officials ultimately sent Harraka back to 7th place within the field.

When the final restart flag flew, Bell managed to keep Harraka behind her until the white flag lap. Taking the checkers in the 5th place position, Bell would add yet another Top 5 to her racing resume and load the car back into the race trailer in one piece. Not something several of the other drivers could claim. "It was one of the craziest nights ever," said Bell. "Congratulations to Shannon Mansch on her win and I'll take another Top 5 for the season."

With only two races left on Mackena Bell Motorsports' calendar, Bell says she is shooting for a Top 3 in the final races and hopes to keep her Top 10 points finish come the final race.

Continue to show your support by joining her during Race #16 this Saturday night, August 23rd in Roseville, CA.

NASCAR Whelen Series Rookie Brings Home Two Top 5's    Posted by: Bell Racing Sports Reporter  |  2008-08-11

As the youngest female in the field, 18 year-old Mackena Bell made an impressive step forward in the NASCAR Whelen series late model division Saturday night when she posted two Top 5 finishes during the All American Speedway - Toyota TRD Twin 50's event.

When afternoon practice session numbers placed Bell in the middle of the 16 car field, she was determined to lay down a solid number in qualifying. When she drew a 2 for qualifying order, she knew being the first on the track, in the heat of the day would be challenging.

Turning up the heat in the K. Bell Tile and Marble #11 machine, Bell posted a 13.947, 86.039 mph lap which kept her in the top 4 of the field until the final two qualifiers. Rounding out the top 6, Bell found herself on the pole for the first time this season, when an inversion of 6 was pulled for the first set of 50's.

"I'm not gonna lie," said Bell. "I was a nervous wreck! I walked myself right over to John Moore and jokingly told him not to take my back bumper off too quickly. He smiled at me, told me to get up on the wheel and drive it as hard as I could. So that's what I did."

Leading the race for just two laps and then falling as far back as 9th while being hung-out on the high line, Bell was determined to bring home that Top 5 finish she has been struggling to conquer. As she rallied back passing Shannon Mansch with 3 laps to go, Bell crossed the finish line behind Paul Harraka, John Moore and Laura Hayes, posting a 4th place finish and her first Top 5 of the season.

"It was a great feeling," said Bell. "My Mackena Bell Motorsports team has worked so hard this season to be competitive with the bigger teams and I was finally able to prove to them that we have what it takes."

With her 4th place finish in the books, Bell found herself yet again on the front row when an inversion of 5 was drawn for the second set of 50's. Lining-up next to veteran racer, Shannon Mansch, Bell said she felt more comfortable with her front row position and raced hard to keep herself in the front of the field.

In a race that saw several cautions, Bell ran strong on worn tires. At lap 50 with the checkers in the air, she managed to round out the Top 6, only to learn later that the 5th place finisher had been disqualified, bumping Bell into her second Top 5 finish of the evening.

After missing two races of the All American series, Bell currently sits 9th in NASCAR Whelen points at All American Speedway. She is just outside the Top 250 drivers on the NASCAR National list of Top 500 Late Model drivers, and is roughly 90 points out from entering the California Top 20. She is also featured in this months edition of Speedway Illustrated Magazine and was recently selected as a finalist in the Sports Illustrated - Faces in the Crowd column.

"Every weekend brings me valuable experience," said Bell. "Going into the season I made some goals for myself, as simple as they may seem to others. I wanted a Top 5 finish and a Top 10 points standing. So far . . . so good," said the smiling teen.

Bell will return to All American Speedway this weekend, August 16th for KIDS NIGHTS at the races. Each child under the age of 12 will be admitted FREE and will receive a soda and hot dog as well.

With only 3 races left for Mackena Bell Motorsports, make it a point to come out and support her!

Mackena Bell Motorsports is sponsored by: K. Bell Tile & Marble, Sciarroni Bros. Racing, K. Dub Creative Web & Graphic Design, NGK Spark Plugs, McBride Machine, Bell Racing Helmets, Joe the Chromer, Benny's Auto Painting, Tires 4 You and Ken Barrette.

Bell Lands Top 5 - But Must Take A 6th On Paper    Posted by: Bell Racing Sports Reporter  |  2008-08-05

Finally landing her first Top 5 of the season, Mackena Bell is forced to settle for a 6th place finish on paper after a "transponder technicality."

Starting her day with mid-pack numbers during the practice sessions, Bell qualified 8th of the 13 cars and started the main event outside, row 4.

Getting a nice start at the green, Bell challenged her way forward and narrowly escaped disaster when fellow female drivers Shannon Mansch, Katie Hager and Kristin Bumbera tangled, sending Bumbera to the pits and Mansch to the infield.

When another crash unfolded within just a matter of laps, Bell braked hard and headed for the bottom of turn 2. Pounded by the 33y of Juan Pitta from behind, Bell said, "You have to drive looking forward, not at the bumper of those in front of you! Looking at the excessive damage to his car and mine, it's evident he never hit the brakes."

With evident damage to the rear quarter panel of the car, Mackena's spotter made his accessment from the spotters stand and okay'd her to continue. Coming off of turn 4, track officials directed Bell back into the 5th place position and she again took the green.

Racing hard to hold off the challenging #61 of Shannon Mansch who had returned to the field a lap down, Bell's spotter radio'd to her to let the lap car by to limit the tire ware. After the pass, Bell stayed glued to the bumper of Mansch until the checkered flag, where she thought she had crossed in the 5th place position.

To her surprise, when she arrived to tech, she was told that the transponders had noted technical problems in scoring which effected the final restart line-up. The result, was Bell being scored 6th and Mansch not being noted as a lap down.

"We knew that wasn't right," said Bell. "We reviewed our race video and immediately took it to Track Director, Frank Vincent. As he reviewed the video, he agreed that Mansch was indeed a lap down, but said I would have to settle for a 6th place on paper due to a "transponder technicality". I'm still shaking my head over it."

As the crew and driver digested a disappointing track decision, Bell's crew chief informed her that she was lucky to have finished the race at all. In examining the car damage, it was discovered that the cords of the back left rear tire were showing through. "I was very lucky to have made the 50-laps and by the looks of the tire, I wouldn't have made many more. I'll take the 6th and move on to next week."

Bell will return this Saturday night to All American Speedway for the Toyota TRD 100 Lapper, where she will once again try for a Top 5 finish. "I'm not gonna give up!" said Bell. "I may not have the unlimited parts and knowledge that the other teams have, but I have a team and they have a driver that together are making their way through a learning season. I'm still having a blast every weekend and for me that's all I need to remind myself that there is no place I'd rather be on a Saturday night."

Join Mackena this weekend for the NASCAR Whelen Series - Toyota TRD 100 lap event. Race times can be viewed at allamericanspeedway.com. See YOU at the track!

Bell Adds Another Top 10 Making It 8 In Her 12 Starts!    Posted by: Bell Racing Sports Reporter  |  2008-07-29

Back in the drivers seat after a 3~week hiatus which included a Journey concert and a vacation to the state of Montana where she took in a Legends race midwestern style, Bell was eager to return to All American Speedway for Race #12 of the NASCAR Whelen ~ All American series.

With several changes made to the car, Bell was anxious to see if the car and the driver would connect. "The car was just a tick tight during the first session of qualifying, but I was having a hard time getting the car through 3 and 4 smoothly." As the crew made a few minor changes in hopes of a smoother transition, Bell returned to the pit area after session two complaining that the car was now much too loose and that she was having trouble taming the #11 K. Bell Tile & Marble machine.

"Sometimes it can be the biggest challenge of the day trying to articulate to the team what I'm feeling and what I want to feel behind the wheel. Saturday was one of those days."

As Bell entered the track to qualify, track temperatures were excessive and after an Enduro race the weekend before, the track was not taking rubber. The result was an 8th place effort by Bell of the 16 car field. With an invert of 6 pulled, Bell would start the main event outside row 4.

As the green flag flew, Bell radio'd to her Spotter that the car felt faster than ever. When the 50-lap race ran wire to wire, Bell said "I needed a few more laps!" Finishing 7th at the checkers, Bell continued saying, "The car felt great but when you have that driver that can't pick a line and you're doing your best to race without any form of contact, what can you do? The crew took some great notes and if we can put the car right back to where it was this weekend, I'm confident that Top 5 is right around the corner for me."

With the month of August supporting a race every Saturday evening and two races cancelled during the month of September, Bell is hopeful that a Top 5 can be added to her resume as well as a final Top 10 points standing.

"I want those watching to know I'm serious about this racing thing. I know there are plenty of us out there focused on the same dream but my focus has never been clearer. The sky's the limit, right?"

As the smiling teen winks at me and ends our interview, she reminds me that when a woman sets her mind to something, there is little that can stand in the way. Getting to know Mackena as I have, I am certain that this young teen can accomplish anything she sets her mind to.

In future news, keep your eyes open for a new look to the Mackena Bell Motorsports website. Mackena assures me that the layout and content will be more reader friendly and that the websites launch is within the month. Stay tuned!

FAN APPRECIATION NIGHT ~ JULY 26th    Posted by: Bell Racing Sports Reporter  |  2008-07-23

"Don't Stop Believing" . . . Those three little words have been fuel for the 18-year old Nevada native for the past 6-years and if you dial her cell phone number, you will hear those words from the 80's band, Journey, playing in your ear as well. So it was no surprise to me when I learned the reason why Bell was absent at the July 12th, NASCAR All American Series race. You guessed it, a Journey concert.

"When I hear that song, it's Mackena's," said Shannon Bell. "We had the opportunity for some great seats and knowing that she doesn't miss a race for just anything, I felt confident in purchasing them as a graduation gift as I knew this would be one of those anythings she would agree to."

Now missing two races of the season, Bell has fallen to the 13th position in late model points, but still less than 30 points from a Top 10 position. Bell says she is happy with her season thus far and is still focused on a Top 5 finish before season ends. "We had a couple really great weeks, qualified well and finished well. Then we fell off a bit. We've made some new contacts, made some small but important changes and I'm excited to get back in the car this weekend and see what I can do with them."

Coming off a weekend that was full of controversy in the late model division, Bell says she hasn't been to a track yet in her 6 years that hasn't had some of that. "You listen, you learn and you continue turning left each weekend," said the teen. "It's all a part of why I love this sport like I do and when you have 20 drivers all focused on the same flag, stuff is going to happen. You have to keep an open mind and keep keepin' on!"

This weekend at All American Speedway located in downtown Roseville, California, it is "Fan Appreciation Night". With beautiful weather on tap, load up the kids, fill up the tank and make the drive over the hill to support our hometown girl. "I love the fans!" said Bell. "Those in Roseville have really made me feel welcome, but the fans that follow me from here over to there... they are the best! I plan to make an appearance in the grandstands and mingle a little. Toyota TRD 100 Brings Double Top 10 Results    Posted by: Bell Racing Sports Reporter  |  2008-06-30

At nearly the half-way mark of the NASCAR Whelen 2008 calendar, Mackena Bell adds another Top 10 finish to her season and places herself into the Top 10 in points.

Finding herself 5th in the early afternoon practice sessions, Mackena was eager for the night to begin. When she drew an early qualifying position, she knew the track would be at its worst for her qualifying effort. Posting a 14.280 second lap at 84.033 mph, Bell would sit 11th in the 17 car field. "I was hoping for better!" said Bell. "The track definitely got faster as the session went on, but what can you do? You go out there, start 11th and hope for the best."

With the Toyota TRD 100 Lapper on the schedule for the nights event, Bell hoped that the 100 laps would allow her the time she needed to make her way to the front of the field. Lining up inside 6th row, she ran strong in the early laps and battled with the 33y of Juan Pitta for the third weekend in a row. "Juan and I are pretty evenly matched and week after week seem to battle for positions. Although our cars are similar our driving styles are not. Pitta likes to beat on me rather than passing me and this weekend I let him know I had had enough."

As 20+ laps of great racing with the #21 of Greg Potts unfolded, Bell went for the pass out of Turn 4. When a three-wide drag race down the front stretch with Pitta and Potts developed, Pitta stayed into the back of Bell and she was forced to lift to avoid a crash. When Bell was asked to comment on the situation, she firmly said "I really have no comment. I guess I had better step-up to the plate or continue to get pushed out of the way!"

Finding herself 14th at the restart flag, Bell rallied back but had trouble making her way to the front. "The car got incredibly tight and I was having a really hard time keeping it down." On lap 81, Bell was shown to have layed down her fastest lap with a 12.956 at 92.620 mph but is certain that this information is incorrectly posted on mylaps.com. "That's not possible, although I like the way it sounds," said Bell. "The score board was not working right all night and a 12 second lap would be insane!" As she came to the checkered flag, Bell was sitting 9th and was 1 of only 10 drivers to finish the race on the lead lap. "I was hopeful for a Top 5 tonight but it just wasn't meant to be. We'll be back next week with some small changes to both the car and it's driver," she says laughing. "Hopefully I can give my hard working crew that Top 5 we've been trying for."

With race #10 - Public Safety Night slated for this upcoming weekend, Mackena says she is optimistic. "Week after week you may not finish where you'd like to be, but if you are a real race car driver you keep going back, you keep challenging yourself and you keep diggin' for that better finish! It's certainly addicting, but at least it's a safe (for the most part) addiction!"

Zack Rispin Wins Community Award ~ Athlete/Sportsperson of the Year    Posted by: Bell Racing Sports Reporter  |  2008-06-28

Thursday afternoon, Mackena Bell, her family and good friend Angila Golik attended the 2008 Annual Community Awards banquet hosted by the Nevada Appeal newspaper.

Bell, who was nominated for Athlete/Sportsperson of the Year was not the recipient of the award but was surrounded by great company including her Pre-School teacher, Mrs. Rosetta McFadden from Kinderland Preschool who was nominated for Mentor of the Year.

"What a great experience," said Bell. "I had no idea this event was so large and still have no idea who nominated me, but I'd like to thank them as I felt very honored to be in such great company."

With awards being presented from Humanitarian of the Year to Organization of the Year, Bell says sharing the nomination with school athlete's Caleb Carter and winner Zack Rispin was quite an honor. "Congratulations to Caleb for his nomination and to Zack for winning the award. I'm certain that both of them have great futures ahead of them."

With Certificates of Commendation from United States Senators Harry Reid & John Ensign and Congressman Dean Heller, Bell adds those to her ever growing portfolio and looks forward to meeting the Senators during a by invitation only breakfast in January 2009, when she visits Washington, D.C. for the Presidential Inauguration.

AT&T “Rumble at Roseville 150" Brings Bell Another Top 10    Posted by: Bell Racing Sports Reporter  |  2008-06-24

As the Mackena Bell Motorsports team pulled into All American Speedway for the AT&T “Rumble at Roseville 150” (150-Lapper), the 106' temperatures were an early sign of the heat filled day to come.

Rolling out the #11, K. Bell Tile & Marble machine, the crew did their best to stay cool and prepared Mackena for the first set of practice laps where she jumped to the top of the boards posting a 4th place effort of the 22 car field.

When qualifying began late afternoon, Bell along with other drivers could feel the track temperature heat taking its toll on the tires. Posting an 8th place qualifying effort, Bell would start outside, row 4 for the first set of 75 laps and felt comfortable with this mid-pack position.

As on-track introductions began, Bell was surrounded with loud applause and cheers from fans and spectators and she showed her appreciation with a wave and smile. Firing up the motor at the direction of the crowd, Bell began her move forward as soon as the green flag fell, but within 15 laps noticed the engine temperature light come on. As she did her best to run strong while keeping an eye on the rising gauge, lap 24 brought a very loose race car coming out of turn 2. "I felt something break loose in the rear of the car. It was hard to steer and the backend just wanted to come around on me. When I got on the gas, the tires would just spin." Bell's Crew Chief, Dave Sciarroni, did his best to keep Bell on the track while analyzing the car from the spotters tower. "Let's get as many laps as we can and hope for a yellow," encouraged Sciarroni.

When the race continued without any yellows, the car became harder to handle and Bell made the decision to exit on lap 35. When the crew took the left rear tire off the car, they realized that the drive hub had broke. Finding a used hub which needed some minor 'at track' fabricating and a wheel adapter plate, the crew went to work to get Bell back together in time for the second set of 75's.

Scored with 35 laps in the first event, Bell would sit 18th in the final standings and start near the back of the pack in the final event. Buckled in tight, Bell's mom Shannon reminded her that if the car didn't feel just perfect, she needed to exit the track. "I'll admit I was a little uncomfortable knowing we had fabricated something to make it work, but I also felt confident that she would do what she felt comfortable doing and that the crew was confident in their repair. I held my breath and hoped for the best."

Within the first few laps, Bell radio'd that the car felt good. That was evident as she began pressuring those in front of her and making her way through the field. At midway she was sitting 11th and was focused on that Top 5 she had just missed the previous weekend. At the checkers Bell would finish 7th, but on the final scoring sheet she would finish 6th, as post-race inspection found the #71 car disqualified

"What a roller coaster of a day!" said Bell. "I was sick to my stomach when I thought we might be done for the day. There is nothing worse than being at the track and not being on the track! The two just don't go together in my brain," she says laughing. "I'm glad we got to run and I thank all of my crew for their unending hard work throughout the day. I'm so lucky to have such a great team of guys."

Bumping herself up the points ladder one more rung, Bell currently sits just 10 points out of 10th place. With the Toyota TRD 100~lapper on schedule for this weekend, Bell says she loves the long lapped races. "The more seat time I get, the better I'll be. I'm focused on a Top 5 finish and I think we are just laps away from getting one. I'm excited to see what we can do this weekend and looking forward to it."

Mackena Nominated for Hometown Community Award ~ Sportman of the Year    Posted by: Bell Racing Sports Reporter  |  2008-06-17

Mackena Bell has been nominated for a hometown community award - Sportsman of the Year. Hosting the event will be emcees State Senator Mark Amodei and Western Nevada College Vice President Helaine Jesse.
"I was surprised when the Nevada Appeal notified me, but very honored," said Bell. "I'm not sure who nominated me or what other candidates I'm running against, but just being nominated is exciting all in itself."
The winner of this prestigious award will be announced on Thursday, June 26th in a banquet style setting at the Carson City Nugget. Check back next week to see if this young lady has added yet another award to her growing resume.

Focus & Determination Are Paying Off for Mackena Bell Motorsports    Posted by: Bell Racing Sports Reporter  |  2008-06-15

Focused and determined to turn some heads this season, Mackena Bell did just that when she posted her fastest lap of the season with a 13.851, 86.635 mph qualifying effort. This effort placed her 6th on the qualifying board of the 21 car field, in event #8 of the NASCAR Whelen Series.

Heading into the afternoon sitting 14th in the points standings of the 36 car roster, Bell had a different confidence than in weeks past. "I'm reading the car better, I'm feeling things I didn't feel earlier in the season and the Mackena Bell Motorsports team is really coming together. Our results are showing that and people are noticing."

Lining up outside row 3 for the feature event, Bell had a great start at the green and raced side-by-side with friend and female competitor Laura Hayes for several laps. By lap 14 Bell had fallen in behind the #22 of Hayes and the top 6 had a five-car-length lead on the back of the field.

When a yellow was thrown on lap 20, Bell had worked her way into the Top 5. With a Texas-style restart, Bell was forced to take the outside position and had a difficult time getting down to the bottom line at the green. "We fell all the way back to 13th," said Bell. "Dave (her spotter) was doing his best to get me cleared to the bottom line, but we couldn't get down."

As the laps counted down, Bell raced hard and fought back to regain those lost positions. By lap 39 she was back in the Top 5 and with just 11 laps left, began battling with the 33y of Juan Pitta. Coming off of turn 3, Pitta got Bell loose and in a sideways drift Bell entered turn 4. "It was crazy!" said the excited Bell. "I stayed in it and wasn't about to lift this weekend! I was able to keep myself straight down the front stretch, but Pitta drove me hard in turn 1 and got underneath me. There was definitely some beating and banging going on, but I held my own and it felt great to drive the wheels off the car and be at the front of the field!"

On the final lap, Bell had rallied back yet again, and gave Pitta a run to the checkers. "I'll take the 6th," said Bell. "We definitely had a Top 5 or better car this weekend and those around me knew it. It would've been great to put my first Top 5 in the books but since we couldn't, it gives me something to shoot for next weekend."

Bumping herself into the Top 12 in points, Bell sits just 8 points out of a Top 10 standing. With All American Speedway adding a 150-lapper, double points race to the June schedule, Bell and her Mackena Bell Motorsports team will head back to Roseville this weekend (6/21) to see how they fare in the lengthy lapped event.

Bell Wears Many Hats - Graduate, Race Car Driver & Legal Adult    Posted by: Bell Racing Sports Reporter  |  2008-06-09

Mackena Bell is having a week that in her words "is the best of the best!"

Graduating on Saturday morning from Carson High School, Bell received her diploma and immediately headed for All American Speedway in Roseville, CA for race number seven of the NASCAR All American Series.

Qualifying with her best effort thus far this season, Bell posted a 9th place standing of the 19 car field and added her 4th Top 10 finish to her six race resume.

"It was a great day!" said Bell. "I couldn't have wished for more."

Starting inside 5th row, Bell was immediately up on the wheel and headed toward the front of the field. By lap 29, Bell was sitting in 7th place and was battling hard with 6-year veteran driver, Kristin Bumbera.

After a clean pass by Bell on the back straight-away, Bumbera made contact with the #11 machine. Both females held their line going into turn 3, but Bumbera continued to drive Bell high out of 4. "I had to lift or she was gonna put me in the front stretch wall," said Bell. "She and I battled during the last race and I thought we had it all worked out, but maybe we don't. Although me lifting cost me two positions, I kept my car in one piece and I'll get my 7th place finish next weekend," she says smiling.

With her unending upbeat attitude, Bell enjoyed a post-graduation party Sunday afternoon with 160 family and friends. Turning 18 today (June 9th), Bell says it has been a week of great experiences and not one that she will soon forget. "I've had the privilege and great opportunity to communicate with some wonderful people this week. With journalists from the East coast to the West and with fans that support me from week to week, I really think I'm the luckiest girl alive!"

With coverage this past week on NASCAR.COM, Speed TV.com, in the Sacramento Bee, Reno-Gazette Journal, Nevada Appeal and this morning in the USA Today, Mackena says there is no need to make a wish when blowing out her birthday candles this evening. "I get to do what I love each weekend. I have a family and great friends that support me and for right now, there is nothing more I'd wish for."

Be sure to check out Mackena's racing schedule and make plans to support All American Speedway by attending a NASCAR Whelen All American series race this summer. Post your comments in her Guestbook and click on her Journal page for her latest entry.

1st Place Pro Finish Earns Bell an Invitation To Nationals in Minnesota    Posted by: Bell Racing Sports Reporter  |  2008-05-27

After her late model race in Roseville, CA., on Saturday evening, Mackena Bell Motorsports loaded up the race trailer early Sunday morning and headed north to Ukiah Speedway for a National Qualifiers event in the INEX 600 Legends Division.

Coming off of a 2nd place finish just a few weeks ago, Bell's crew rolled out the #25 owned by Mackena's late model crew chief, Dave Sciarroni to see what they could do on one of Mackena's favorite past~time raceways.

In her first hot lap session, Bell posted a 2nd place effort and a 5th place effort of the 27 car field. Lining up to qualify, Bell rose to 4th place on the board and firmly placed herself on the pole of the Trophy Dash.

With a great start out of Turn 4, Bell got the hole shot, only to over drive-it coming into Turn 1, pushing high. As the first through third place qualifiers left Bell on the high side, Bell finished a frustrating fourth. "Turn 1 was there before I realized it," she said. "I guess I thought I was still at the Roseville track or something..." she says with a giggle.

As a 6 was pulled as the invert number, Bell found herself lining up outside second row for the main event. Running a hard and consistent race, Bell crossed the checkered flag 3rd overall and 1st in the Pro Division. This finish earned Bell an invitation to the INEX 600 Legends Nationals which will be held at Elko Speedway in Minnesota, October 2nd through the 4th, 2008. "It was a good, strong run," said Mackena. "Both Dave and my Dad made some small changes to the car and they paid off. The motor runs strong and I had some great restarts. Overall, it was a pretty darn good weekend. Anytime I can race two nights in a row, I'm loving it!"

With no racing scheduled for May 31st, Mackena will return to Roseville, CA., on June 7th. Check back for those race details in the weeks to come. See YOU at the track!

HANGIN TOUGH BRINGS ANOTHER TOP 10 IN NASCAR WHELEN SERIES ~ ROSEVILLE, CA.    Posted by: Bell Racing Sports Reporter  |  2008-05-27

After missing race #5 of the NASCAR Whelen Series to attend her Senior Prom last weekend, Mackena Bell was ready to return to the drivers seat for race #6 at All American Speedway.

Increasing her lap times from the afternoon practice sessions, Bell posted her best qualifying effort of the season, 13th of the 21 car field.

Lining up inside 7th row for the main event, Bell was ready at the green and had a nice first lap start. As the race saw some early cautions before lap 25, Bell avoided the mishaps and found herself battling yet again with the #10 of Katie Hagar. For several laps Bell and Hagar shared paint and raced each other hard before Hagar and the #14 of Tony D'Alessandro crashed on Lap 34.

As the competitive driving style of this division unfolded, Bell hung tough and leaned back when leaned on. Lap after lap as she watched the field bump and bang, she exchanged positions with several drivers as the laps counted down. "We were all racing hard. That's what we're there to do, it's why we love to drive race cars," said Bell.

Staying strong and gaining positions on the #67 and #32, Bell and the #00 of Kristin Bumbera challenged each other. As Bumbera pushed her high and into the wall coming out of Turn 4, Bell held her line down the straight-away. When Bumbera got into Bell coming out of Turn 2, Bell stood firm yet again and sent Bumbera spinning toward the infield. As officials declared rough driving from both girls, they sent them both to the back of the field. "She drove me hard in 4 and I wasn't gonna lift and just let her have it coming out of 2. I've been doing a lot of that to avoid crashing my car, and if I let them push me around, that's exactly what they're gonna do! I don't have the big sponsors to fix a crashed race car from weekend to weekend like a lot of them do, but I'm not about to let them push me out of their way just because they can!"

As the 50th lap approached, Bell fought her way back through the field and brought home her third Top 10 finish of the 5 events. "Another Top 10. I'll take it. The car had minor damage to the hood and rear quarter panel, and finally some bumps and bruises on the passenger side! I'll be back on the 7th and ready to race and hopefully we can better our qualifying effort and our final position."

With her high school graduation falling on the morning of race #7, Bell says she will collect her diploma and head North to the speedway. "It's gonna be the perfect day," said Mackena. "Graduation and racing all in one day. I'm gonna be one happy girl!"

Mackena Brings Home the CROWN!    Posted by: Bell Racing Sports Reporter  |  2008-05-23

When her Senior Prom fell on the night of race #5 at All American Speedway, it was no surprise to hear that Mackena Bell was wishing she could be in two places at one time. Throughout her busy afternoon, she found her thoughts drifting from painted nails and an up-do, to who might be fast qualifier at the Roseville speedway.

Although missing a race is something she rarely considers, her sacrifice paid off as she was announced the Carson High School, Class of 2008 Prom Queen at the beautiful Silver Oak Golf Course. "What a surprise!" said the excited Bell. "I went with good friends, had the perfect dress and my family was there to hear the news with me. The only bigger surprise to everyone was that I was in high heels!"

As the week before prom unfolded, Mackena was shanghai 'd by good friends, Magan Rodgers and Emily Tobias. She was required to wear a crystal filled tiara and colorful sash everyday and attend the pre-prom assembly, where her classmates voted her 'Class Clown of 08'. "The entire thing was definitely something new for me," said Mackena. "But an experience I really, really enjoyed and not one I will ever forget."

As the Senior Class was reminded that they had only 12 days left of school, Mackena says she felt both excited and sad. "This school year has flown by. It seems hard to believe that in less than 2 weeks I'll be graduating. But man, is that the best sentence ever!!"

For parents Kelly & Shannon, they couldn't be more excited and proud of their upcoming graduate. "It's an emotional time, but a happy time," said Shannon. "She's lived her high school years the way she wanted too. She's stayed true to her beliefs and her goals, and I think she realizes now, that in the end, it has all paid off. She couldn't have planned it better, and we couldn't be more proud of her."

With a Memorial Day weekend full of race opportunities, Mackena will be anxiously heading back to Roseville, CA for race #6 of the season and then to Ukiah Speedway to climb back into a Legends car. Until these race results are available, be sure to check~out Mackena's prom photo's under the photo's icon and see you at the track!

FROM PROM DRESS TO FIRESUIT!    Posted by: Bell Racing Sports Reporter  |  2008-05-23

Carson High senior and Prom Queen candidate Mackena Bell is a little different from your everyday high school student.

When not attending classes, officiating basketball or volleyball games for the Carson City Recreation Department, or babysitting after school, Bell dons a fireproof suit and a full-face helmet and straps herself into a 450 horsepower Late Model stock car most Saturday nights. Bell, who will turn 18 in June, has been working up to this level since she first turned a wheel in a box stock Outlaw Kart at Champion Speedway in Carson City in 2002.

After coming back to win the track championship in the Legends division in Champion's final year of operation, she continued to race both an Open division 500cc Outlaw kart and a Legends car, and was offered a chance at a Late Model for two outings at All- American Speedway in Roseville last season. This year she is competing at Roseville on a regular basis in her own car.

Bell's weapon of choice is a LaHorgue Late Model chassis with Pontiac bodywork and a 350 cubic inch V8 engine massaged by legendary engine builder Harold Long. In four outings so far this season, she has two top 10 finishes and is currently 12th in points. She is not running for the championship due to several date conflicts, but considers this a "learning" year.

"I'm getting more comfortable in the car, and it's fun to have all that horsepower," Bell said.

She said that the toughest part is figuring out if the car's handling needs to be changed, or if she needs to modify her driving style.

"I'm working on my communication with (crew chief) Dave Sciarroni. It's frustrating sometimes, not knowing if it's the car or if it's me, but we're getting better at it."

Bell has aspirations of moving into the professional ranks, and is once again a candidate for NASCAR's "Drive for Diversity" program this year. It will be her third attempt at the program, and she is hopeful.

"Most of the women in the program are in their 20s, and have been trying for a number of years," she said.

She also noted that Danica Patrick's recent win in the Indy Car series was a big boost for female racers at all levels.

Like most serious racers, Bell has a rigorous fitness program, working out at the gym and playing volleyball. The fitness program is a recent addition to her schedule, because she realizes that it helps her in the car. She has also modified her eating habits to incorporate a healthier diet. Racing drivers are athletes, and to be successful they need to train like athletes.

Asked about the most difficult thing for her at this stage of her career, Bell gets thoughtful.

"I think I'm probably too hard on myself," she says. "I'm my own worst critic. I need to get over that."

She went on to say that of the 20-plus drivers who regularly compete in the Whelen Late Model series at Roseville, she really only compares herself to the other women (six in all) who are in the series, all of them older. She also mused about her rapid transition from a box stock kart to faster and more powerful karts, then into Legends cars, and now the Late Model.

"It seems like just when I've conquered something, I move up to another challenge," she said.

Indeed, although she's had considerable success at each step of the way, she has never hung around to consolidate that success.

However, she does take a step back every now and then. Just this past Saturday she traveled to Madera, Calif., to race a Legends car owned by her crew chief, Sciarroni. She qualified well enough to make the trophy dash, then ran down the leaders in the A Main and took second place in a photo finish.

Bell credits much of her success to the help and encouragement she has had along the way.

"My parents, especially my dad working on my cars, Dave Sciarroni, and so many others have helped me," Bell said.

She is also grateful to her sponsors: K. Bell Tile and Marble, NGK Spark Plugs, Benny's Auto Painting, Joe the Chromer, K. Dub Creative Web Design, Sciarroni Brothers Racing, Lady Eagle Safety Wear, Scott Performance Wire, and Ken Barrette. Without sponsors, you just don't race.

Mackena will graduate from Carson High along with her class on Saturday, June 7. But instead of partying with her classmates, she'll be heading over the hill to Roseville after the ceremony to climb into her race car and do battle on the asphalt.

"I'll probably miss one practice session, but I'll be there to qualify and race," vowed the young racer. Now that's dedication!

LEGENDS RACE ~ 2nd Place Run in Madera    Posted by: Bell Racing Sports Reporter  |  2008-05-12

Buckling back into a Legends car owned by her Late Model crew chief, Dave Sciarroni, Bell headed for Madera Speedway in Madera, CA where she was feeling excited about returning to one of her favorite tracks. "Madera was always fast and a lot of fun last season. I felt really comfortable in the car and Dad and Dave did a great job getting the car just where I wanted it."

Posting a 6th place effort during the first set of practice laps and a 3rd place effort during the 2nd set, Bell felt ready for qualifying as the team made some simple, last minute adjustments to the car. Those adjustments seemed to pay off when Bell quickly jumped to the top of the qualifying board and only fell one position when final standings were posted. "The car felt great and my times showed that. Climbing back into a Legends car was easy... I was surprised how quickly it all came back."

Trying to find more speed for the evenings events, the crew played with a few more changes to the set-up during the Trophy Dash. When those changes didn't bring additional speed, the crew put the car back and lined up for the main event. When a 12 was chosen for the invert, Bell found herself starting 11th, inside 6th row of the 22 car field.

At the green, Bell quickly found the gas. Fighting for each position, she had trouble getting around the slower traffic as many of them were not running the high or low line, but their own line. "I kept thinking to myself, 'pick a line! pick a line!'. When I'm not running points, I always consider those that are. I've ran plenty of races where some driver from another track shows up, crashes people up and ruins finishes and points for those running them. That isn't how I race," said Bell. "Sure, I'm there for the same reason they are, to win, but in the back of my mind I was focused on the best finish possible without crashing up the Owners car or jeopardizing someone's point standings. It doesn't always work out for me on paper, but I always feel good about my decision after the race."

As the 30-lap main event continued, Bell worked her way toward the front of the field. As she watched the 1st and 2nd place drivers battle for several laps, she was ready when they finally tangled and collected 3rd and 4th. Bell went low with the #05 and raced hard to the yellow flag. "I was a full straight-away behind 5th & 6th with 10 laps to go!" said the excited Bell. "I drove the tires off that car and caught them just in time. Had it not been the white flag lap, I think I could have won the race!"

Crossing the finish line right on the heels of rookie driver and grandson of last seasons competitor Randy Fellman, Bell said it was a great night overall and one her confidence needed. "I love racing my Late Model, but it is a learning season for me and the top 3 finishes are not there...yet. Running the Legends car reminded me that no matter what I'm driving, I'm happiest in a race car. With my hectic Late Model schedule I don't know that I'll have the opportunity to get back in the Legends car, but if the car is available and the dates work out, I'd love to run it again. Thanks to my awesome crew chief Dave and to my Dad for working so many hours this past week to get the car done. I think the effort was worth it!"

Unable to run this weekends Late Model race at All American Speedway to attend her Senior Prom, Bell has a week of "Prom Queen" candidate fun and responsibilities to participate in. These include being shanghai'd by her friends & family, a King & Queen assembly and a "Senior~Senior Dance" where she and the other candidates will host a night of dancing for the local senior citizens of Carson City. "It's gonna be a week of fun that I'm really looking forward to. I can't believe how fast this year has gone by and I can't think of a better way to end it. It's all about memories at this point!"

Check back next week for race details regarding Memorial Day weekend and see YOU at the track!!

100-Lapper Brings Top 15 Finish for Bell    Posted by: Bell Racing Sports Reporter  |  2008-05-09

"I've got to get my qualifying turned around," said seventeen year old Mackena Bell of her effort during the Toyota TRD 100 lapper at All American Speedway. "Starting toward the back each weekend makes me more determined than ever, but it also doesn't allow me to run with those I know I'm capable of running with."

Coming into the May 4th event, Bell was sitting 15th in points, -70 behind division leader Gary Glenn. "I asked the crew to make some changes to the car that I thought would make us better as the night cooled off. The truth is the car just never came around and only felt good until about lap 40."

Although the teen expressed her discouragement over the radio, she raced hard and worked her way into a 10th place position midway through the race. But on lap 51, Bell was battling with BMR driver Katie Hagar coming out of turn 4. When Katie got sideways, Bell tapped the back of her and lifted to avoid the spinning #10. As she slowed the #26 of Tim George, Jr. drove up over the back of Bell and parked his car on top of the #11 machine. "I knew someone had gotten into me because I was on the gas and going nowhere fast," said the smiling Bell. With her continued enthusiasm, Bell existed the track where her crew duct taped the window, removed the back quarter panel and got Bell back on the track within 3 yellow laps.

Avoiding incident after incident, she was hit yet again while dueling for 11th after her back of the field restart. Pushing the toe out even further, Bell was having a difficult time driving the car. By lap 91 Bell was sliding in one turn and heavily pushing in another, but continued until the checkered flag. Although the final standings show Bell 14th and 3-laps down, Bell says she was never passed by the leader. "My goal was to stay on the lead lap. They don't count the yellow laps after lap 75, so the crash early on that sent me to the pit area cost me that 100 lap finish on paper."

With the car already repaired and race ready for Bell's next showing, May 24th, Bell will start 12th place in points, just 12 points outside a Top 10 position.

Bell will be missing the next scheduled race on May 17th to attend her Senior Prom where she has been nominated for Prom Queen. Bell was quick to tell me that although she prefers her racing suit over a formal gown and high heels, she is looking forward to the experience and the nights events.

With this weekend, (May 10th) being an off weekend in the late model division, Bell and her crew have decided to head to an old stomping' ground for Bell, Madera Speedway in Madera, CA. There she will buckle back into a 1250cc Legends car to run with the Legends of the Pacific tour, a traveling group she ran with last summer. "It should be a lot of fun!" said Bell. "I miss my old Legends car and some of the division drivers. I'm looking forward to seeing some of them again and running for fun. That always seems to change everything!"

Another NASCAR Whelen Series Top 10 for Bell    Posted by: Bell Racing Sports Reporter  |  2008-04-28

Returning to All American Speedway for race #3 of the NASCAR Whelen summer series, Mackena Bell was eager to hit the track to insure that the damage her machine suffered during the demolition style main event on April 19th, was ready to race.

With over 25 friends and family on hand for the 50-lap main event, it was clear that this young driver has captured the hearts of other All American Speedway spectators as they roared during driver introductions. "It's always nice to sit in the drivers seat and hear the fans cheer you on," said Bell. "I can remember the crowd at my hometown track and it always encouraged me to drive a little harder knowing they were there to see a great race!".

Of the 20 late models on hand, Bell would qualify 13th and start seventh row inside for the feature event. Doing a great job to avoid several crashes after the 20 lap mark, Bell fought the car as the tires went away, but finally felt the car from the drivers seat and raced her way to another Top 10 finish. "Both my Dad and Crew Chief, Dave Sciarroni, have been telling me that once I learned to feel the car, my driving would improve. I drove the car hard this weekend and could tell that I was under power from the previous week. I worked my way closer and closer to the wall and focused on driving it in harder and moving up coming out of Turn 2. I know that each week I will learn something new, and at this point, I'm happy with that. I know the rest will come."

With two Top 10 finishes in the first three events, Bell is looking forward to improving her qualifying efforts and her final standings in the events to come. With the Toyota TRD 100 lapper this weekend, Bell says she is ready for the lengthy race and intends to put another Top 10 finish on her statistics list.

As with each week, the Late Model main event is scheduled to start at 8:00pm, with practice laps beginning at 2:00pm and qualifying at 5:00pm. Click on Mackena's SCHEDULE icon for all up-coming events, and see YOU at the track!

Strong Charge Ends with DNF    Posted by: Bell Racing Sports Reporter  |  2008-04-20

Rookie driver Mackena Bell returned to All American Speedway on Saturday night sitting 10th in Late Model points and anxious for race #2 of the NASCAR Whelen series.

Coming off a top 10 finish in the season opener two-weeks ago, Bell says she felt much more comfortable in the #11 K. Bell Tile & Marble machine and her performance on the track was proof of that. "It's never taken her too much time to get comfortable in any car she drives," said father and car owner, Kelly Bell. "Last weeks seat time has already made a difference in her performance."

Qualifying 17th of the 24 car field, it was no surprise that Bell was disappointed in her effort. "She is her worst critic," said Mackena's mom, Shannon. "I'm often reminding her that this is her learning season, but she rarely entertains that conversation. She has always been determined, but this year she is definitely focused on results. From her diet to her lap times, there's just something different about this race season. I guess she's ready to make them stand-up and take notice."

As the 25 car field lined-up to run the Main Event, Bell started inside row, position 17. Within just 4 laps Bell began her charge for the front putting pressure on her competition and laying down visible increasing lap times.

Sitting 12th at the midway point under caution, Crew Chief, Dave Sciarroni told Bell to continue her charge and challenge for a top 10 position. On lap 39, Bell passed the #32 car of Bill McAnally Racing on the high side and positioned herself with a 10th place spot.

Two-laps later when the #32 made it three-wide going into turn 3, driver Lindsay Barton shot high and hit the back left of Bell, sending her into a side-ways-drift entering turn 4. "I had a flashback of my side-ways-drift in the Marty Melo late model I drove last season," said Bell shaking her head. "I drove the car so hard and I had it saved coming out of turn 4, but on the video you can see she's back into me in the front straight-away and you can even hear the crowd booing her. It was crazy!! It's for sure gonna be an exciting year and coming from a "gamblers State", said Bell with a wink, "I'd say it's safe to bet that next time it won't be me sitting in the infield."

With water leaking from the radiator, Bell's spotter called her back into the pit area and ended Bell's night on lap 41. With obvious cosmetic damage, Kelly Bell says the rest is pretty minor. "We'll need to replace the fan and radiator and straighten out the door panel, but now that we have a few bumps and bruises, I've got a good feeling it will make next weekend all that more fun!"

With final results placing Bell 20th, she says, "We easily had another top-10 car this weekend. My team is doing a great job making the changes I need and I'm confident in saying that another top-10 finish is in our future, our near future."

PRESS RELEASE 4/9/08 - Bell Captures A Top 10 In Season Opener!    Posted by: Bell Racing Sports Reporter  |  2008-04-10

NASCAR TOP TEN FOR YOUNG FEMALE DRIVER!

To view more photos of the #11 Late Model, click on the POLAROIDS link at the top of this page.

Seventeen year-old Mackena Bell of Carson City, NV has started her rookie season in the NASCAR Whelen Series with a top 10 finish of the 22 car field, in the 50-lap season opener, at the infamous All American Speedway in Roseville, California.

As the youngest competitor in the California series, Bell has progressed through the dirt and asphalt ranks since age 12 and has a Championship Title in both divisions on her resume.

In her Rookie Year as an asphalt driver, Bell became the youngest driver ever at age 14, to capture a Championship title in an asphalt Legends car in her hometown tracks 42 year history.

Graduating from the prestigious Lyn St. James Driving School in 2005, Bell has 4 Rookie of the Year awards and a "Most Inspirational Driver" title under her drivers belt.

Establishing her own company, "Mackena Bell Motorsports" in early 2008, Bell is running the family owned 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix with a 2002 Lahorgue Chassis. With a stock front clip, the car is powered by a Chevrolet 350 SPEC Motor built by Harold Long of Long Engines, and produces over 400 horsepower on the 8-inch Goodyear tires. To insure comfort, the steering and pedals have been customized to accommodate the 5' 3" driver as well as a custom fitted Randy Lajoie racing seat.

Focused on learning as much as possible throughout this 2008 season, Bell says the most important part of running this series is progressing from week-to-week and earning the respect of those already successful in the series. "You can learn so much by watching and listening to others," said Bell. "By pushing myself each time I enter the track, being patient and up-on-the-wheel, my goals are simple for the season. Improve each week, stay positive and finish races."

With a relatively small race team compared to other drivers within the series, the #11 Late Model is headed by Mackena's father, Kelly, and Crew Chief Dave Sciarroni of Sciarroni Bros. race team. "She has a ton of potential as a late model driver," said Sciarroni. "I have no doubt that she will find success at this level as she is mature beyond her years. I was impressed at how well she analyzes what the car is doing and surprised at how clearly she can communicate that information back to me. This car is a big change from what she is used to driving and I think our biggest challenge is getting her comfortable with how hard she can drive this car through the corners. Once we conquer that, her success will follow."

With a calendar full of race dates, this young driver is expected to run over 20 races at the Roseville based speedway from now until mid October. With returning sponsors such as K. Bell Tile & Marble, NGK Spark Plugs, Bell Racing Helmets & Accessories, K. Dub Creative Web Design, Joe the Chromer and Benny's Auto Painting, Mackena welcomes the full support of Sciarroni Bros. Racing and is in the works of bringing on several other sponsors to assist in this seasons goals.

The full seasons racing schedule as well as other information about this young talent can be found on Mackena's website at: www.MackenaBell.com OR www.Bell-Racing.com.

Television and newspaper press, sponsors and companies who have an interest in this hometown driver can contact Mackena Bell directly at MackenaBell@aol.com.

See YOU at the track!!

Race for a Reason Charity Event is a Huge Success!    Posted by: Mackena  |  2008-02-15

Mackena Bell participated in her second Race for a Reason Charity Event, hosted by five-time USAC Western States Sprint Car Champion, Tony Hunt on February 10, 2008.(Click on POLAROIDS icon for updated photos)

Held at RPM (Race Place Motorsports)in Sacramento, CA., the indoor karting facility provides a fun, but competitive atmosphere and all donations benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Northeastern, California.

Of the twenty-two teams on hand, Bell, who was selected as a Celebrity Driver, gave up that honor to participate on a team with long standing dirt kart competitors Kyle Larson, Daniel Becker and Colby Copeland. "I was very honored that Tony selected me as a celebrity driver, but I found out after agreeing to be a part of Kyle Larson's team. I was looking forward to running with my karting friends and I was happy that Tony understood that. Next year, if I'm asked, I'd like to captain a team of all females. I'd really like to see how we would place and I think we might surprise some people."

Bell's team which was headed by 10-time dirt karting Champion and current Sprint Car driver Kyle Larson participated in the three segment competition. Qualifying, a pit stop challenge and a 45-minute enduro event unfolded throughout the day as her team was able to win the enduro main event and finish fourth in qualifying. But with a disappointing 15th in the pit stop challenge, which required the teams to simulate a NASCAR styled pit stop, Team #17 placed sixth overall. "Of course we wanted to win, said Bell, but the event is just a lot of fun. Thanks to Tony Hunt and Brent Webb (owner of RPM) for all their hard work on putting this event together and congratulations on raising the biggest amount of money to date, $25,759.00. I look forward to the event next year and encourage everyone to mark their calendars!"

Bell to participate in large charity event    Posted by: Bell Racing Sports Reporter  |  2008-01-23

Mackena Bell has announced that she will participate in the 6th Annual Race for a Reason on February 10th, 2008. The event organized by 5-time Champion, Tony Hunt, takes place at RPM Indoor Kart Racing in Sacramento CA. The indoor karting facility will again host the event that benefits the Make-a-Wish Foundation of Sacramento and Northeastern California.

The day at “RPM” will feature 32 teams with four drivers each battling for trophies and bragging rights on the RPM tracks. Karting participants will race as a team on two different courses as well as competing in a pit-stop challenge. Early indications are that 5–Time USAC titlist Hunt will be joined by stars such as Tanner Faust – 2007 X-Games Gold Medalist and D1 Drifting Champion. Road racing champion Joey Hand and three-time USAC Silver Crown title holder Jimmy Sills are also expected. Among these participants, Bell looks forward to competing with other great drivers like friend and dirt kart Champion Kyle Larson ~ (www.kylelarsonracing.com)."This fundraiser enables drivers from many different divisions to come together for a great cause," said Bell. "Not only does this event raise a great amount of money, but it allows us drivers to give back to the fans that come out each weekend to support us. I'm honored to have been asked back by Tony Hunt and look forward to having a great time."

The competition is secondary to the primary goal of raising money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation which grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. 100% of net proceeds will be donated directly to the Make-A-Wish of Sacramento and Northeastern California. Last year the one day event raised more than $23,000.

Fast and fun.....    Posted by: Mackena  |  2008-01-21

As she had anticipated, Mackena Bell was part of the fun and fast paced action during the fight for the prestigious 6ft. Perpetual Trophy during race #9 of 13 of the Red Bluff Outlaws.

With the track unusually hard to read, both Bell and her crew missed the set-up for qualifying and put the 17 year-old female driver 17th in the qualifying line-up.

Running in the first of four heat races, Bell had a strong charge and was sitting in the transfer position of 4th place before trying to avoid the stalling Daniel Becker. When Bell was hit hard by Daniel Thorson, she flipped the kart onto it's side and headed for the back of the field. With two laps to go, Bell made a strong charge but missed the transfer position and was forced to run the B Event.

Starting 9th of the 20 kart field, Bell quickly made her move by using the lower line and passed 5 karts within the first lap. Moving to the top line, she held a strong 4th place transfer position until 4 laps to go when Super Late Model Champion, Steven Gannon, drove into everybody, including Bell to overtake the transfer spot. Bell, who fell back to 7th, was able to come back to pass Ritcheson and while passing Gannon, Gannon drove into the side of her and Bell fought back to hold him off. Hitting the break to try and avoid him and dive low, Bell stalled the kart. When she was hit hard from behind, Bells quick reflexes kicked in and she pulled in the clutch and revived the stalled kart, never losing a position. At the checkered flag Bell had to settle for 5th, missing the transfer spot by one position. "What a night!" said the excited Bell. "I knew at the start of the day that this place would be crazy tonight and I was up for the challenge. I wish that Gannon would have driven me clean because I think both of us could have raced each other hard and put ourselves in the A Main. I never like watching from the grandstands, but after our crappy qualifying effort, I was pleased with my run in the heat race and the B, and the kart was fast. I think we could have finished well in the Main Event and possibly brought home the trophy. But...I guess I'll have to do it next year instead!"

With a positive attitude and a few bumps and bruises from the nights event, Bell wished 12 year-old Oregon driver, Seth Nunes and congratulatory comment and said she was looking forward to returning on the 2nd of February for Napa Night.

Check out all the race footage and photo's at www.rboutlaws.com and post your comment(s) in Mackena's GUESTBOOK located at the bottom of this page. Until next time, have a nice Martin Luther King Jr. holiday and keep turning left!

Bell Passionate About Election    Posted by: Mackena  |  2008-01-21

CARSON HIGH SENIORS READY TO VOTE, READY TO 'MAKE AN IMPACT'.

The votes have been cast and tallied - and they say one thing: "OBAMA!"
This week Carson High seniors, virtually all of whom will be of voting age by November's election, participated in a mock caucus, casting votes by secret ballot and answering questions about who they want to be their first elected leader.
The results, government teacher Angila Golik said, were "eye-opening."
"We're about evenly split between those who affiliate with Democrats and Republicans," she said. "So, we were pretty surprised when one candidate seemed to capture most of the attention - and the vote."
Barack Obama received 206 of the 414 seniors' tallies to garner half the "popular" vote from Carson High teens.
Those who voted were given a choice of 11 candidates and did not have to vote according to party lines.
The next highest vote getter was Republican candidate Mike Huckabee, who received 39 votes (or 9 percent).
"It's pretty clear who the seniors are voting for and why according to the survey," Golik said. "This group of kids is pretty well-versed on the elections. All teachers are discussing it every day as a part of current events. These numbers actually aren't too far off the national numbers for this (demographic)."
Senior Jordan Nash, 18, a registered Republican and self-described conservative, said he wasn't too surprised at the mock-election results, but also noted that he was a "McCain man."
"I think we need someone who can finish the war, and do it in a responsible manner," he said. "I don't believe in (Obama's) plan for immediate withdrawal. I think if there was a draft, I will sign up before."
Senior Gage Mead, 18, also coming from the right, said he was mostly undecided on a Republican candidate to support, but was leaning toward Mitt Romney.
Mead said he also felt the war is top of mind for most of his peers.
"We need to stay in and get things resolved," he said. "I'm not saying I necessarily agree with how Bush did it - but I think someone needs to keep us on a direct course, one that will ensure we get stability.
"I have friends and family that serve - so I support them."
Mackena Bell, 17, who voted Democrat, said Obama's Iraq exit strategy is a responsible and realistic one.
"I think good-old Obama has a plan and a good one," she said. "My belief is we shouldn't be there in the first place. His plan is to be out by '09 and I think it's done in a sound way to turn (the nation-state) over to the people of Iraq."
All seniors, who came of age post-Sept. 11, said the ensuing war on terror and invasion of Iraq is the hot-button issue amongst their peers.
Alejandra Melgarejo, 17, an Obama supporter, said, "There are other things, like immigration, but, I think the war is what we're exposed to most - I think it's what you hear people (our) age talking about. I think it has the most effect on us every day."
Indeed, when asked about the current down trend of the economy, teens to the left and right of center in Carson felt the economy would right itself.
"I don't know a whole lot about it," Nash said. "But I do think the thing to do is to keep working hard and if we keep going - we'll see the other side."
Melgarejo agreed.
"I think the part of the economy that most closely (affects) us is paying for college," she said. "I know a lot of people who are worried about that, who are thinking right now about how they're going to do it - whether they can afford it.
"This ties into education in general. Are we going to keep 'No Child Left Behind'? It's going to be interesting to see how the next (administration) deals with education."
Government teacher Golik, who helped craft the mock-election survey to go along with students' votes, included questions about what issues were important to seniors.
"This group of kids is really on the national board with what's out there, they really have a firm grasp of the issues, and a firm notion of what it is they care most about," she said. "It's just a really interesting time to be coming of age and voting for the first time."
Some 96 percent of seniors polled said they were planning to vote in November. Some, like Melgarejo and Bell, have already volunteered for campaigns.
"Whether we agree or not on the issues or the candidates, all of us have become pretty political," said Mead. "I don't think you can grow up at the time we did and not be involved. This is going to be our first say, and I think it's going to make an impact."

Back to Racing!    Posted by: Bell Racing Sports Reporter  |  2008-01-11

After a winter storm knocked out power to the Tehama County Fairgrounds and canceled the first race of 2008, Mackena Bell is anxious to return to the dirt and determined to fight hard for the 6ft. Perpetual Trophy this weekend. Together with her younger sister, Kellcy, Bell is the only female to win the trophy in the past several years. Bell who won in 2005 says she would put the 6ft wonder back in the same spot. "My mom had placed it in the entry way of our house and I think it would look perfect there again."

Giving up their tickets to the famous Chili Bowl dirt race, currently running in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with drivers like Tony Stewart and Kasey Kahne, the Bell family has been kept up to date by friends attending the event. I"ll be there next year," said Bell with a big smile. "I'll be fine tuning my driving skills throughout the summer season and with any luck, I hope to be joining my fellow competitors back East in early 2009." Hearing of the Oklahoma action has created even more chomping at the bit for this teenager. Bell and the crew will head over the hill this weekend on clear roads and safer driving conditions. "Hopefully some of the moisture has stayed in the track and the track will be perfect for some fast and furious competition. I'm anticipating some bumping and banging because when the perpetual trophy is up for grabs, everyone knows that anything goes!!"

Be sure to check back on Monday morning as the Courier will update the race fans with the final results and Bell hopes to be at the top of the standings.

From Mackena Bell Motorsports, Happy New Year and the best to each and every competitor in 2008. ~See You At the Track!

December DIRT Update. . .    Posted by: Bell Racing Sports Reporter  |  2007-12-20

December 1, 2007 ~ Running double time during the 5th race of the season, Mackena Bell returned to her old stompin' grounds by subbing for missing driver Jason Mittry in the 2x machine of the Open Intermediate 500cc division. Qualifying the car with a 2nd place standing, winning the 'B' Event and then fighting for the lead position in the heat race, trophy dash and feature event, Bell had a great night and provided Jason Mittry with the necessary points to keep him in the points chase. "The biggest test was trying to fit into Jason's car!" said Bell laughing. "Running with all those 'youngsters' reminded me of how fun that class was for me and although I love the competitive nature of my division, the competition in any division is a blast!!"

With some extra seat time under her belt for the day, Bell was eager to drive her 500cc machine to see if she could post the same numbers within her own division. That would not be the case. Qualifying a disappointing 24th, Bell did manage to claim the runner-up position in her heat race and was running an impressive 5th place in the 'A' feature event, when 2W drove into the side of her and Bell refused to lift. "He had driven me hard all night and I wasn't about to let him do it again! Sometimes you have to lean back in order for them to realize that you're not gonna take it, so that's what I did." Finding that the kart had been damaged and nearly impossible to steer, Bell hung strong and posted a 9th place finishing result.

December 8, 2007 ~ Being shown just outside of the Top 15 in points, Bell had more difficulty in week 6 of the season posting yet another disappointing qualifying effort, 21st. "We just can't seem to read the track like we need to," said Mackena. "With no rain the track is dry and depending on how they line~up qualifying, it's kinda the roll of the dice."

Running in heat race 3 of 3, Bell finished within the transfer positions for an automatic place in the 'A' feature event. Starting at the back of the field, Bell took to the high~line within the first 5 laps and ran her kart right up against the wall. "That line was fast for me and it showed. I was the only one going forward and I was driving the wheels off that thing. It was a fun, fast night... and that's how I like em'!" Bell finished within the Top 10 for her second consecutive week, posting a 9th place finish.

Bell did not run race #7 ~ December 15, 2007 (Gary Jacob Memorial) due to a conflicting event within her hometown.

As for the 2008 schedule, Bell intends to make the rest of the scheduled races. She will be back in Red Bluff for the January 5th, 2008 race, after returning from North Carolina where she is spending a week doing some public relations work. "I'm really excited to get back there, check out the race tracks and meet the people in the racing world. It is a great opportunity for me and I intend to talk "racing" as much as they'll let me!"

Until then, MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR from everyone at Bell Motorsports and remember to visit this website for a big 2008 announcement in the weeks to come. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Time for a November DIRT update!    Posted by: Bell Racing Sports Reporter  |  2007-12-03

Lots of action to talk about over the past few weeks of dirt racing... Here is a recap of the November 10th & 17th races.

During race #3 & #4 of the season, Mackena brought back the "female presence" she is known for qualifying toward the top of the charts. With a 17th place position in race #3 and a slightly improved 15th place position the following week, Bell was hopeful that her night would be a success.

During the November 10th race, the racetrack was the worst the competitors had ever seen it. "Seriously, it is the worst track I have ever raced here in Red Bluff," said Bell. "I didn't need my HANS this weekend, I needed a motocross chest protector!" With ruts and divits in all four turns, race after race karts were on their lids and drivers were doing their best to stay on all four tires. "The area has not had any rain and the track shows that," said Kelly Bell. "When you have a track like that the only way you move forward is by staying out of the crashes and just finishing the race in one piece."

As the track officials debated tearing-up the track and repairing it, they were still throwing the green flag for the Heat races. Starting in the back of the 10 kart field, Bell finished 5th, missing the automatic transfer to the 'A' feature.

Beginning mid field of the 'B' event, Bell worked her way toward the front of the field and was sitting 6th when she became part of a Turn 3 pile-up. "The guy was out of control and parked himself on two of us. The track made it really, really difficult tonight." The crash sent Bell to the back of the pack where she finished 9th. "I'm just lucky that the kart is still in one piece, with minor body and wing damage and that I didn't end up on my head! You can't race on a track when you have mini-moto jumps in the turns. These karts are too low for a track like that and when you hit a 'jump' you can't steer or control the gas pedal. I hope Bob can repair the track to what we are all used too and that next weeks race will be back to Red Bluff style!" said the frustrated Bell.

Arriving for that 'next week' race on November 17th, Bell immediately got track side to view the dirt. "It looked great!" said Bell. "It was obvious that Bob Carrel (track promotor) had put a lot of time and effort into getting the track back to a raceable surface. With all the changes me and Dad had made to the kart, I was looking forward to being fast and covering some ground!"

Fast she was, as she entered the track for qualifying. Posting a 10th place position of the 27 kart field, Bell was happy with her 8.74 lap, just off the 8.71 field of the Top 6. Winning the first heat race of 4, the race between Bell and Sean Becker was one of excitement and excellent driving. "Sean is a professional sprint car driver and we both know that we will race each other hard and clean. It was a fast, fun race, just like I like em' and he definately made me work for that win!"

With that win, Bell had accomplished her previous week goal of transferring directly into the main feature from the heat race. Starting near the front of the field, Bell knew that the race was going to be fast and furious with such an excellent surface. With the normal beating and banging that the 500cc Open karts provide, Bell hung tough after being involved in a lap 12 pile~up and scored her first Top 10 finish. "What a night!" said the exhausted Bell. "It always takes time to figure out the kart and my Dad has it figured out. Now I just need to keep doing my part and with any luck we will start having some consistent 'A' feature finishes and begin moving up the points ladder."

With the November updates posted, look for this past weekends details early tomorrow morning. Until then, remember to post your racing comments in her Guestbook, 'keep turning left' and see YOU at the dirt track!

Bumping and a Banging!    Posted by: Bell Racing Sports Reporter  |  2007-11-09

Returning to Red Bluff, CA., for her second dirt race of the season, Mackena Bell was determined to improve her opening day results and looking forward to a 'redo' weekend. Greatly improving her qualifying effort from 34th in week one, to 17th this weekend, Bell says she calmed down and felt that the track was better prepared. "I made the gas pedal~brain connection this weekend and the kart actually went somewhere," she says smiling. "Sometimes my excitement gets the best of me and last weekend that definitely showed in my results."

In a heat race she called a "Bump, bang and wreck fest" Bell managed to keep her kart free of the many pile-ups but was unable to make the main feature with her 6th place finish.

Starting third row, inside of the 'B' event, Bell quickly jumped into a transfer position and avoided the first lap incidences. On Lap 19, a multi-kart crash blocked three-quarters of the back straight~away. Bell's quick reaction kept her from the incident but she was slammed in the back by another driver that failed to lift from the gas pedal in time. Knocking her pipe from its spring, Bell had to leave the track due to the noise rule. Although Pete Johnston and Tyler Ritcheson came to her aide, the two could not repair the damaged pipe before the green flag flew. Bell was subsequently shown in the 15th place finishing order and would again not make the main feature. "Thanks to both Pete and Tyler for trying to help me and I hope that Tyler's burned hand is not too bad. I'm really disappointed that I'm leaving here again without making the main event, but with all the fun I'm having, I'm keeping this season in perspective and using it to keep my driving skills and reaction times at their best."

Heading back this weekend for race #3 of 13, Bell says she will focus on bettering her qualifying position, transferring from the heat race to the main event and bringing home a Top 10 finish! Be sure to check out the newly vinyled kart, designed by Mackena and Kory Williams of KDub Creative, on the Polaroids page. Post your racing comments in her Guestbook and return next week for all the racing results. Until then, Mackena reminds you to 'keep turning left and she'll see YOU at the dirt track!'

Great to be Back!    Posted by: Bell Racing Sports Reporter  |  2007-10-29

CHECK OUT THE NEW KART ON THE POLAROIDS PAGE!
Anxious to return to her dirt racing roots, Mackena Bell and her family made the trip north to Red Bluff, CA., where the home of Outlaw Kart Racing comes alive from late October through mid March.

Unveiling a new color scheme for the 07'~08' season, Bell was surprised at just how excited she was to get back on dirt. "By the time I'm done running asphalt, I'm ready to return to dirt," said Bell. "Each Fall when I return I'm quickly reminded of the intense competition and the need for more foam padding in my seat," she says laughing.

Unloading the kart at 8:00am, her Crew Chief father, Kelly, immediately got busy wrenching on the kart. "We haven't been on dirt in almost 8 months," said Bell. "Since we missed the practice last weekend, this will be our practice today. I've told her not to expect much, but to pay good attention to how the kart feels."

During qualifying Bell's excitement was obvious when she had difficulty getting the kart to go forward. "My lead foot got the better of me," said Mackena. "I sounded fast cause I was burning my tires off and revving her to the moon! It's easy to jump back in one of these things and over power it. That's exactly what I did."

Qualifying 34th of 39 karts, Bell joked with her fellow drivers that she wanted to start in the back of everything and make her way to the front of the field. In reality that is exactly where she would start the 10 kart heat race, where she would finish 6th and be placed at the back of the 'B' Main Event. "When I went to check my qualifying time, I thought they forget me on the list! Then I realized, they didn't forget me, they just added me to the top of the SECOND page!" Shaking her head and giggling, Bell knew she had her work cut-out for her, but was still positive and upbeat about the day.

With 25 laps in the 'B' event, Bell would have to make a fast charge to the front of the field and avoid the guaranteed pile-ups to make the Top 4 and transfer to the 'A' feature. Within 5 laps the first yellow flag flew. Bell had started 12th of the 16 kart field and was sitting 9th by lap 18. When a second yellow flew, Bell again missed the incident but finished the race in 8th position, putting an early end to her night. "I'm not surprised that we didn't make the 'A' feature tonight," said Mackena. "The competition is crazy here and if you don't bring your "A Game" week after week, you'll be in your t-shirt and blue jeans while the sun's still shining!"

With her contagious giggle and positive attitude, Bell is looking forward to returning to Red Bluff this weekend, focused on making the 'A' Main Event and confident that she has the ability to bring home a win this season!

Asphalt Season is Over.... Dirt Season set to start    Posted by: Bell Racing Sports Reporter  |  2007-10-25

With the Legends of the Pacific Banquet hosted this past weekend in Sacramento, CA., Mackena Bell and her Crew Chief Father, Kelly, brought home the hardware that represented their 2007 season.

While Bell finished 3rd in the Pro Division and 4th in the Overall standings (of 58 Legends cars), the surprise award belonged to her father. Anyone keeping up with Mackena's summer season knows that the team was plagued with motor problems. Week after week, Bell struggled to conquer the gremlins and felt responsible for the non-winning season of his oldest daughter. "It was a difficult season," said Bell. "I can only hope that next year we figure it out early and bring home a few wins."

To his surprise, Bell's hard work and dedication did not go unnoticed. Bell was presented with the "Adversity Award" and was praised on his continued efforts and dedication not only to his daughter, but to the sport. "It was a nice surprise," said Bell. "That award will always remind me of what a hell of year we had!" Although his speech was short and to the point, Bell summed-up his opinion of the little purple machine by stating, "The car is definitely a female!" With laughter and applause from his fellow crew-chiefs and drivers, Bell says he is looking forward to the time away from the asphalt track and gearing up for the dirt season in Red Bluff, CA.

With 15 races slated for the Red Bluff season, Mackena Bell is anxious to get back on dirt and is looking forward to reuniting with her dirt kart competitors. Known to be the most competitive dirt kart series on the West Coast, Bell Racing is hoping to start the season with a sound machine and a program which will run in the Top 5. "Last year I would have had Rookie of the Year and finished 8th in points had I not run for Sean Becker early in the season," said Mackena. "This season I look forward to competitive racing but intend to keep it as fun and light hearted as possible." Laughing out loud and shaking her head, Bell immediately retracts her statement saying, "Who am I kidding? I'm going down there to race hard and win some money. It's what I love to do and I'm looking forward to it!"

With the new season just a day away, Bell Racing will be missing an important part of the team. Mackena's younger sister, and two-time Red Bluff Champion, Kellcy, has decided to run a limited number of races this year as the athletic bug has bit her. "It won't be the same without her," said Mackena. "In Red Bluff we are a team and I'm gonna do all I can to get her back in the kart and back in the drivers seat. Both Kellcy and I are very competitive and with the season I just watched her play in basketball, I have no doubt that she can climb back in that car and win some races! I hope I can get her to change her mind."

Stay tuned for the Red Bluff details by logging on each week. Check-out the POLAROIDS page and don't forget to post your comments in Mackena's GUESTBOOK located at the bottom of this page. See YOU at the track!

Second attempt brings home Top 10 for Bell    Posted by: Bell Racing Sports Reporter  |  2007-10-01

In her second NASCAR Whelen Series race at All American Speedway in Roseville, CA., Mackena Bell held true to her word that she was going to step-it-up this weekend!

With early practice laps placing her 10th in the field of 21 cars, she was optimistic about her afternoon and hoped to improve her debut finish of 12th. Posting a qualifying effort of 14th, Bell lined-up the Dan Gamel RV sponsored late model near the rear of the field. Anxious but feeling confident, her improved performance on the race track was evident within the first 5 laps. "Seat time is everything," said Mackena. "Each time I'm in the car I feel more confident and that's reflected in my driving."

With several cautions early in the race and a hard hit in Turn 1 that caused a frightening car fire near lap 30, Bell reminded herself under the red flag to stay focused and up-on-the-wheel. Running in the mix of the action, Bell battled for her Top 10 position and found herself being pushed into the wall coming out of Turn 4 on Lap 39.

With the help of car owner Marty Melo in her ear, Bell was able to recover the car from the wall but not without further contact from the #42. When Bell kept her line, the #42 broke loose and put himself into the wall in Turn 1. "I wasn't expecting that!" said Bell. "He was still into the side of me at the flag stand and I was doing my best to drive out of it. If I had lifted, I would've been the one in the wall and I've already been there, done that," she says shaking her head. "It was an unfortunate ending for the #42, but it taught me a lot about the handling of my car and proved to me that not only am I ready to do this, I can do this!"

For the second time this rookie driver loaded the Melo Motorsports late model into the race hauler in one piece and brought home a Top 10 finish for the team. "Everyone at Melo Motorsports is a class act," said Bell. "They have been very supportive and I am thankful for the opportunities they have given me this year. I'm anxious to see what doors open up for me in 2008 and hope to continue living my weekends at the racetrack. For me, that is home."
